Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder. People with ASD often experience difficulty with communication, social interactions, repetitive behaviors and motor skills. Recent research suggests that medical cannabis may be a useful treatment option for someone with ASD.

Improved Social Interactions & Behavior

Recent studies showed children with ASD had significant improvement in their social communication skills such as speech and sign language after around six months of treatment with medical cannabis. One of the most notable effects of medical cannabis is mood improvements, better ability to focus and reduced rage meltdowns. Many parents noticed a decrease in restrictive and repetitive behavioral outbreaks, self harm, tantrums and agitation.

Reduced Seizures & Epilepsy

Reports have shown medical cannabis has helped reduce the frequency of seizures and epilepsy significantly. People ranging in age from 2-26 years old had reported of 54% decrease in seizures after taking medical cannabis. Some people have achieved sufficient seizure control with medical cannabis to the point of stopping their other anti-seizure medications.

Better Sleep Patterns

A common side effect of those with ASD is restlessness and insomnia. Medical cannabis has been linked to improving sleep and concentration in ASD patients.
