Texas legislative has filed several bills to expand access to medical cannabis in Texas. In recent news, HB 1805 passed in the house on April 12, 2023. HB 1805 would add chronic pain as a qualifying condition and the THC dosage would be measured in milligrams. This would allow physician to prescribe medical cannabis to patients suffering from chronic pain for which they would otherwise be given opioids. If passed in the senate, this bill would expand the state of Texas' medical cannabis program to millions more Texans.
Can Medical Cannabis Replace Opioids?
According to CDC chronic pain affects approximately 1 in every 5 Americans and can impact an individuals quality of life. Texas opioid overdose deaths reached a high of more than 5,000 drug overdoses between July 2021- July 2022 more than 100,000 nationwide in 2021.
A 2023 study showed that states with approved adult use of cannabis laws show a 26 % reduction in prescription codeine dispensing according to DEA. Medical cannabis offers patients a naturally way to manage pain while improving overall health. Medical cannabis can provide a safe and effective treatment option with zero reported overdose deaths and a lower risk of dependence.
